Baglung | How to get there and what to see?


Baglung is one of the beautiful places in Gandaki Province in Nepal. It is about 275 km away from Kathmandu. It is the headquarters of Baglung district and Dhaulagiri Zone. Baglung Bazar is located on the plateau overlooking the Kali Gandaki gorge south of the Dhaulagiri Himalayan region. It can be called a quaint trading place. Visitors frequently visit it because of the route to Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Dhorpatan and Dolpo. It is the centre for business, finance, education, service and healthcare for the people of Kali Gandaki valley that encompass Beni, Kusma, Galkot, Phalewas and Jaimuni local bodies.

Baglung airport is located about 12 KM south of Baglung and there are flights to / from Kathmandu, Bharatpur and Siddhartanagar. It was the sole connection to the outer world prior to the completion of the highway (Pokhara-Baglung highway – 72 km). Just above the airport, you will find the village of the Rokas (a caste) and on the top of the mountains lies a popular shrine of Lord Bhairav. If you reach the top, you can feel a breathtaking view of Himalayas and Kusma Bazaar.

It was developed after the successful completion of Pokhara-Baglung Highway in the Middle of the 1990s. In 2021, the work on the highway continues and the road is much better from Pokhara to Kushma on the way to Baglung (soon all pitch road).

In the past, Baglung remained as a trading hub where merchants used to visit to buy salt brought by Tibetan traders. Some places like terraced fields, waterfalls,forests , deep gorges and caves are very attractive. In addition, every year almost thousand pilgrims come to visit Baglung where a famous temple named Kalika lies. At Chaite Dashain and main Dashain, many devotees got to visit and worship.

Likewise trekking, biking and rafting can be experienced. It is also considered as the vantage point for trekkers to Dhorpatan Dolpo, Mustang, and Mt. Dhaulagiri. Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is also called a hunting reserve in Nepal and a prime habitat for blue sheep as well as snow leopard.

Tourism in Baglung

Historically Baglung was once known to be a business hub for Nepal’s northern and southern areas. It now serves as a transit centre for those visiting the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Dhorpatan and Dolpo area.

With the construction of mid hill highway, Kaligandaki corridor, Saljhandi-Dhorpatan road and many other strategic road networks, there are many possibilities to promote Baglung as one of the potential tourism hubs.

It lies in the ring of Pokhara, Lumbini and Mustang, the most popular tourism destinations of Nepal. It is also becoming the entry point for the western part of Nepal through mid hill highway. Baglung bazar, the town is well connected with Myagdi’s Beni bazar and Parbat’s Kushma bazar. Baglung bazar is 272km west of Kathmandu, 13km south of Beni bazar and 12km north of Kushma and it is 72km west of Pokhara.

Although there are currently no air links to the district, there is an airstrip in the district in Balewa. There are 28 community homestays established in different locations of Baglung for accommodating domestic and foreign tourists. Baglung is the best place for trekking and rich in local Magar culture.

Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Adjoins, Rukum, Myagdi and Baglung District in the Dhaulagiri Himal range in West Nepal. Putha, Churen and Gurja Himal extend over the northern boundary of the reserve.
Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve was established in 1983 and was gazetted in 1987. Management objectives of the reserve allow sports hunting and preserve a representative high altitude ecosystem in West Nepal.


The Gandaki Golden Bridge is a suspended footbridge with a span of 567 m over the Kaligandaki River. The height of the bridge is 122 m from the river level. Gandaki bridge connects the Kusma Municipality of Parbat district  at Aduwabari with Baglung Municipality 1 bangechour of Baglung in Nepal. The bridge is the second longest bridge of its kind in May 2022 after the opening of Sky Bridge 721 in Czech Republic, prior to that it was the world’s longest foot bridge. Gandaki Golden Bridge has a capacity of 85 MT and can carry the load of 612 people at a time.


Baglung is a road less traveled offering the travelers with an array of natural, cultural, and recreational activities.  Baglung district is a part of Gandaki Province of Nepal. Known to be a business hub for northern and southern part of Nepal, Baglung now serves as a transit center for those visiting the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Dhorpatan and Dolpa area. Due to the presence of many rivers and suspension bridges it is also popularly known as the district of suspension bridges.

Clear views of the Himalaya can be seen throughout Baglung, while areas such as Bhakunde, Panchakot are popular for the spectacular views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range. The terrain is suitable for trekking, biking, rafting making it a perfect holiday destination for adventure seekers. Kalika Bhagwati Temple is said to be the most popular temple in this region where an annual fair is held during the festival of Chaite Dashain attracting many pilgrims every year. 

Popular attractions of Baglung are Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, the only licensed hunting reserve in Nepal and a prime habitat for blue sheep. The other prime attractions of Baglung are Baglung Bazaar a thriving town, and the administrative headquarters of Baglung district; Panchakot/ Shaligram Museum, ammonite museum of religious and archaeological significance about 7 km from Baglung Bazaar; Kalika Bhagwati Temple, a significant Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Kali situated on the banks of Kali Gandaki river; Galkot Durbar which used to be the residence of the Malla kings who ruled over Galkot during the Baise and Chaubise Rajya period; Gaighat Jharana or falls, a perfect sighseeing, picnic spot for wanderers. 

The nearest airport is in Pokhara about 80.5 km, travelers can take a bus from there and  reach Baglung in abour 2.5 hours. Tourist standard hotels and homestays are available for Accommodation in Baglung Bazaar.

Kalika Bhagwati Temple

This temple is very famous religious place to worship Goddess Kaali, goddess of destruction. People come here to visit not only in & around Baglung district, but in whole Nepal and northern parts of neighbouring India.

Thoroughly amazed by the peaceful and natural surrounding of the Temple, as this temple is situated inside a protected forest, around 500 meter away from the Baglung highway, and the view of the forest is amazing.



The waterfall is located in Tarakhola rural municipality and is a natural attraction for visitors. The waterfall has its source at Daramkhola which flows through Amarbhumi village.

With the development of roads, there are many access points from where visitors can reach the waterfall such as Rijalchowk, Galkot Hatiya Bazar and Harichaur. Many trekking routes are available from this waterfall area. There is a popular religious site known as Kalibaraha pond/Temple, locally known as Motimare at about 3 km uphill. Motimare connects Kalilekh, Shibadhuri, Latekhoriya and Jhuleni.

This holy pond is located at the top of Damek, Resha, Lekhani, Dudilabhati, and other several outlying settlements but, officially lies under Jaimini Municipality, Baglung.

According to the local folklore, no leaf is left on the surface of the water even though the pond is surrounded by willow ( Bais) trees. There is a temple in the name of Siddha Baraha and a community-operated homestay alongside.
